According to the California Energy Commission, “Lighting systems and controls must be designed to comply with the Energy Standards to ensure energy efficient operation and adequate illumination.” The state’s regulations for lighting include Title 20 and JA8, both of which cover bulbs and fixtures used in homes and businesses.

JA8 requires that all lighting be “high efficacy,” meaning that many applications must use JA8 certified light sources in order to comply. In order to become JA8 certified, bulbs and fixtures must meet strict requirements and pass rigorous testing.

Title 20 applies to a variety of LED lamps including general service, directional, recessed, and decorative lamps with candelabra (E12), intermediate (E17), medium (E26), and GU-24 bases. Title 20 compliant bulbs must meet several requirements, including producing at least 68 Lumens per Watt and having a minimum rated life of 10,000 hours. For more information, take a look at California Code of Regulations (CCR), Title 20.

Switching to Title 20 and JA8 bulbs and fixtures helps reduce energy costs. Their longer life span also reduces time and money spent on replacements. Additionally, JA8 products have a high color rendering index (CRI) of 90 or more, which makes colors appear brighter and more vivid. Depending on where you live, Title 20 and JA8 bulbs and fixtures may qualify for rebates through state or local utility companies.
